팀 미팅중에 종종 어떤 프로젝트는 '돈이 너무 많이 들어서' 혹은 '너무 비싸서' 진행 할 수 없었다는 설명을 할 일이 생깁니다.

1차원적으로 생각하면 'It was too expensive so we could not pursuit it' 이렇게 표현할 수 있지만, 'cost prohibitive'란 표현을 사용하면 좀 더 분석적이며 정중한 느낌을 줄 수 있습니다. 

이 표현은 단순히 "비싸다"는 의미를 넘어, 비용이 너무 많이 들어서 해당 일을 진행하는 것이 사실상 불가능함을 전문적으로 나타낼 수 있습니다.  즉, 비용이 실행을 '금지(prohibit)' 할 정도로 높아서, 잠재적인 이익보다 지출이 더 크다는 결론을 내릴 때 쓰는 세련된 표현입니다.

이 표현을 실제로 쓸 수 있는 방법 몇가지를 알아보겠습니다.

Roll back generally means to revert something to a previous state. Think of it like undoing a change or going back in time to how things were before.

오늘 소개해 드릴 표현은 "circle back" 입니다.

아래 사진처럼 원을 그려 다시 돌아오는 동작을 기억하고 계시면 이해하시기 쉬울 것 같습니다.

다양한 경우에 사용될 수 있는데 3가지로 크게 나눠서 설명 드리겠습니다.

1.  프로젝트 미팅중에 구체적인 데이터에 대한 질문이 들어올 때가 종종 있습니다.

답변이 정확하게 기억나지 않을 때, “나중에 알려줄게” 라는 표현으로 update (I’ll update you on that) , get back to you (e.g., I’ll get back to you on that), follow up (I’ll follow up with you on that)  등등 여러가지 표현이 있습니다.

이 외에도 세련되게 쓸 수 있는 표현 중 하나가 “circle back” 입니다. 말 그대로 원을 그리듯 다시 돌아와서 어떤 내용에 대해 얘기한다는 의미입니다.

예문을 들어보겠습니다.

I don't have all the data on that right now, but I'll circle back with you by the end of the week with an update.

지금 당장은 그에 대한 모든 데이터가 없지만, 이번 주말까지 업데이트된 내용을 가지고 다시 연락드리겠습니다.

~에게 ~에 대해 다시 연락한다 는 표현으로 사용하시고 싶으면

circle back with someone on something 이런 식으로 사용하시면 됩니다.

2. Circle back은 위의 예처럼 “나중에 업데이트 하겠다” 는 의미 외에도, 회의 중에 “어떤 주제에 대한 논의를 잠시 보류했다 후반에 다시 얘기하자”는 의미로도 쓰입니다. 원을 그리듯 다음 주제에 대해 논의한 후 다시 지금 주제로 돌아오자는 의미겠죠.

예를들면 아래와 같이 사용할 수 있습니다.

"That's an interesting point, Sarah. Let's circle back to the budget implications after we've discussed the marketing strategy."

사라 씨, 흥미로운 지적이네요. 마케팅 전략을 논의한 후에 예산 영향에 대해 다시 논의하도록 하죠.

그리고 아래 Ted talk 시작부분에서도 이런 의미로 circle back이 사용되었네요.
